چکیده

Within a highly evolved mult icel lular organi sm, communicat ion between dis tally located ce l l s occurs by means o f a variety o f different chemica l s ignals . These hormonal substances play important roles in deve lopment , maintenance, and fertility and are a lso involved in coordinating immune and neurological responses to external st imuli . Chemical communicat ion can also occur between individual organisms , and the m o l e c u l e s representing these s ignals are referred to as pheromones (Karlson and Luscher 1959) . Wellknown examples o f pheromones in higher sys tems include those serving as sex attractants in insects and certain vertebrates. Communicat ion between unicellular organisms is , by def ini t ion, via phero m o n e s , and the involvement o f such substances in certain stages o f devel opment is wel l known or has been implicated in a number o f microbial spec ies (Ensign 1978; Hirosawa and Wolk 1979; Kaiser et al. 1979; Biro et al . 1980; Aaronson 1981; Stephens et al. 1982). Chemical substances that are excreted and facilitate mating between t w o organisms are cal led sex pherom o n e s ; these compounds and their behavior have been studied in fungi , algae (Kochert 1978), and ci l iates (Nanney 1977). Much attention has been focused on the yeast a and a-factors and the mating phenomena associated with their

Isolation and structure of the Streptococcus faecalis sex pheromone, cAM373.

The Streptococcus faecalis sex pheromone, cAM373, which induces a mating response of donor cells harboring plasmid pAM373 and is also produced by Staphylococcus aureus, was isolated and its structure determined. Supernatant from an overnight culture of a recipient strain was subjected to successive purification procedures, and 4.4 micrograms cAM373 was obtained. The isolated pheromone showed ac...

Identification and characterization of genes encoding sex pheromone cAM373 activity in Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus.

The sex pheromone cAM373 of Enterococcus faecalis and the related staph-cAM373 of Staphylococcus aureus were found to correspond to heptapeptides located within the C-termini of the signal sequences of putative prelipoproteins. The deduced mature forms of the lipoproteins share no detectable homology and presumably serve unrelated functions in the cells. The chromosomally encoded genetic determ...

Streptococcus faecalis sex pheromone (cAD1) response: evidence that the peptide inhibitor excreted by pAD1-containing cells may be plasmid determined.

Streptococcus faecalis strains harboring the conjugative plasmid pAD1 excrete a small peptide, iAD1, which inhibits the sex pheromone cAD1. Studies making use of the host strain Streptococcus faecium 9790, which normally does not excrete peptide pheromones, suggest that iAD1 may be determined directly by pAD1.

Control of Enterococcus faecalis sex pheromone cAD1 elaboration: effects of culture aeration and pAD1 plasmid-encoded determinants.

Aeration of plasmid-free Enterococcus faecalis strains resulted in an 8- to 16-fold decrease in sex pheromone cAD1 activity in culture filtrates. Levels of two unrelated pheromones, cPD1 and cAM373, were unaffected by culture aeration. Aeration also resulted in a decrease in the expression of conjugative transfer functions observed in cells containing pAD1 traB mutations, verifying a link betwe...

Enterococcus faecalis conjugative plasmid pAM373: complete nucleotide sequence and genetic analyses of sex pheromone response.

pAM373 is a 36.7 kb conjugative plasmid in Enterococcus faecalis that encodes a response to a peptide sex pheromone, cAM373, secreted by plasmid-free (recipient) strains of enterococci. It was identified over 15 years ago as one of five plasmids in E. faecalis strain RC73 and was of interest because a related pheromone activity could be detected in culture supernatants of Staphylococcus aureus ...
